Hello by Hand is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit movement and an initiative of Artly World, based in Austin, Texas and growing nationwide through local chapters. Its premise is deliberately small: a handmade card takes about twenty minutes, and for a senior living in a care facility who rarely receives mail, it becomes something held and reread for weeks. Volunteers make cards at monthly popup events or at home and mail them to a central P.O. Box, where they are sorted, photographed for a public archive, and delivered to care facilities. Workplaces, schools, and community groups host their own sessions, and ambassadors run chapters in their own cities. There is no fee to take part.

Loneliness is a measurable health problem
Social isolation among older adults is treated as a public health issue, not a mood. We can speak to what a small, physical, repeated gesture does that a phone call does not, and why handwriting specifically matters to someone who has stopped receiving mail.
A volunteer commitment measured in minutes
Most volunteering asks for a recurring slot. This asks for twenty minutes, once, with no training and no background check. We can talk about what that lowered barrier does to who shows up, and what happens to the people who come back anyway.
What a workplace offsite can actually be
Companies book us instead of an escape room. We can speak to what teams say afterwards, and why making something for a stranger changes a room faster than a trust exercise.
The archive as a record
Every card is photographed before it goes out. The result is a growing public archive of ordinary people's handwriting, addressed to strangers. We are happy to talk about what that collection has turned into.
